Welcome to the Miracle Theatre Group!

¡Ay, caramba! What a sea of changes there has been at El Centro Milagro this past season! We’ve renovated our lobby, installed a new marquee, celebrated our 25th birthday and now, like everyone, we find ourselves navigating the waters of a challenging economy. But thanks the commitment of our subscribers, donors and regular patrons like you, we’re happy to report that the Miracle — the Northwest’s premier Latino arts and culture organization — is on course for an extraordinary 2009-2010 season that will take you on amazing journeys to places both foreign and familiar.

The Miracle begins its season in October with our signature production, El Día de los Muertos Festival, our annual Day of the Dead celebration. This year, we visit Depression-era Oregon to discover what remains when all the trappings of life are lost. January brings the world premiere of American Sueño, a play about the search for the American Dream, a production that will then tour the nation throughout 2010. In February, we present a very modern, very funny battle of the sexes in the Mexican comedy Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda (Between Villa and a Naked Woman). Our season continues in the spring with a stage version of How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Julia Alvarez’s best-selling novel about four vivacious sisters torn between the old world and the new when they leave the Dominican Republic for the Big Apple. We are thrilled to conclude our season on the plains of Spain with a boisterous family-friendly bilingual adaptation of Cervantes’ classic El Quijote.

“The world may be in constant transformation, but at times those shifts are felt more keenly, unsettling us and creating cracks in our foundation. We must grab hold of the most important things we have to sustain ourselves. But what are the most important things? This season Miracle looks at the biggest challenges we face in life — loss of home, loss of identity, loss of money, loss of life — and the strength of the human spirit to rise above all these losses,” says Olga Sanchez, Artistic Director of the Miracle MainStage and Bellas Artes. “Told in vibrant acts of theatre, these tales of transformation create a purifying crucible in which the human essence, what is truly most important, is revealed and celebr ated!”

But it’s during tough times like these, when we are forced to set aside many materials things, that we as a society also risk marginalizing those who are not like ourselves.

“We often imagine that we have entered into a new era of tolerance and unity — and yet we see discrimination continuing to rear its ugly head,” says Dañel Malán, Artistic Director of Teatro Milagro. “Despite best intentions, legislators are forced to create policies that require schools to protect marginalized populations from harmful words and actions. Why can’t we all just get along? In a perfect world we could, but in our not-so-perfect world we can at least do our best to share our vision of equality and diversity while celebrating the contributions of all. American Sueño is Teatro Milagro’s effort to raise the collective consciousness, as expressed by our President Barack Obama: ‘And it lives on in those Americans — young and old, rich and poor, black and white, Latino, Asian and Native American, gay and straight — who are tired of a politics that divides us and want to recapture the sense of common purpose that can unite us.’”
