How would you define your artwork?
I find it difficult to define it, since I don’t consider it something thought out, but rather direct and relatively spontaneous, though not improvised in terms of concept and intent. It is modernist, Dadaist, a bit Cubist, half Pop/Op, and at times surrealist. It is very much based on the line, on Fauvism, on experimentation and on the idea that art always has to express something personal beyond the obvious or explainable.
Tell us a bit about the influences on your artwork.
There are definitely many influences, be it a song, a line, feelings, perspectives. A great influence has been my father, friends, family and the styles mentioned before.
[For the image of “Learn to Be Latina”], the general message of the play, the use of stereotypes in marketing, the word “Latina” and my conversations with Milagro all suggested how to represent it.
This is not your first time showing your work at Milagro. What can visitors to your exhibit expect to see this time?
I showed at Milagro for the first time in 1996; this will be my second time. This time visitors will encounter my most recent work, pieces not previously seen before, for the most part. The exhibit will consist mainly of a selection of works from different series: imaginary worlds and still lifes, as well as the original artwork used to promote “Learn to Be Latina” and “El Laberinto del Deseo”, another commission from Milagro, and a just-completed, limited-edition series of prints. For the exhibit I have selected to set the mood with music by Heriberto Montes and his band “Aristeo”, pioneers in electronic music along the Sonora-Arizona border in the 70s & 80s. There are also some collaborative pieces, with music by Lenny Oldeboom (from Holland) and my poetry.
The exhibit is free and open to the public one hour before each performance of Learn to Be Latina, which runs Thursdays (7:30), Fridays & Saturdays (8:00), as well as Sundays (2pm).

¿Cómo definirías tu arte?
como algo sobre pensado, sino más bien directo y relativamente espontáneo, pero
no improvisado en lo referente a su concepto e intención. Es modernista, dadaísta, un tanto cubista,
medio pop/op y en ocasiones surrealista. Se basa mucho en la línea, en el

así como una edición limitada de una serigrafía acabada de realizar. Durante la
exposición he seleccionado para ambientar la presentación algo de música de
Heriberto Montes de Oca y su grupo Aristeo, pioneros de la música electrónica
en la frontera Sonora-Arizona, de los 70’s y 80’s. También he incluido algunas
piezas recientes colaborativas con música del holandés Lenny Oldeboom y mi
poesía.
