Providing extraordinary Latino arts, culture, and heritage experiences for the enrichment of all communities.
Statement on Cultural Equity
To support a full creative life for all, the Miracle Theatre Group commits to championing policies and practices of cultural equity that empower a just, inclusive, equitable nation. In Oregon, we recognize the history of oppression that has resulted in ongoing disparities for some communities, as well as the limitations of a nonprofit framework to address them. Yet, we have a powerful network of organizations and change agents with an opportunity before us to create positive systemic change. The Miracle Theater Group strives to prioritize engaging diverse perspectives through the arts and promote artists equitably. The mission and vision we hold for enriching the lives of all Oregonians, move us to directly challenge ourselves and to deconstruct frameworks of oppression while building opportunities for learning, change and accountability. The Miracle Theatre Group is committed to our own equity journey, the diversity of our membership and the broader nonprofit community as change agents that contribute to an inclusive and equitable Oregon that champions our rich diversity.
To provide informed, authentic leadership for cultural equity, we strive to…
Pursue cultural consciousness throughout our organization through substantive learning and formal, transparent policies.
Acknowledge and dismantle any inequities within our policies, systems, programs, and services, and report organization progress.
Commit time and resources to expand more diverse leadership within our board, staff, and advisory bodies.
Adopted unanimously by the Board of Directors at its regular meeting April 22, 2019
Milagro Student Protection Policy
We envision a future where all children and young people have the opportunity to engage in and have access to the benefits offered by participation in the arts. To that end, Milagro strives to make the arts and the spaces in which they occur safe, diverse, and inclusive and that children participating in activities here will be inspired to create confidently and unapologetically. To do this Milagro will create a safe environment by:
- Making sure that rehearsal or teaching rooms are open, accessible, and well lit.
- Providing separate changing areas for children of each gender and for adults
- Following health and safety legislation and guidance.
- Establishing clear guidelines regarding what is considered acceptable content for children and
youth participating in activities at Milagro. - Ensuring that activities are appropriate for the youngest or most vulnerable person (this could
be due to age or stage of the child’s development) - Ensuring that any physical contact is approached sensitively, is appropriate, justifiable and
agreed to by the child or young person. - Asking for the opinions of children and young people participating in activities and
encouraging them to speak out about anything that might be concerning to them.
Milagro will create a well-supervised environment by:
- Making sure to have appropriate child to adult ratio for optimum supervision. In most situations, best practice will require at least two adults present when working with children and young people.
- Clearly define professional boundaries and appropriate behavior to those working with children and young people to avoid any potential misunderstandings or allegations.
- Ensuring that photos, videos, and other visual representations of children and young people are sensitively handled, and that adult permission is obtained for public release of those photos.
Health and Safety
At Milagro, we are constantly reevaluating our safety policies to ensure that they meet CDC recommendations, comply with local mandates, and meet the unique needs of our theater and community. After careful consideration, we have decided to remove the requirement that patrons show proof of vaccination to attend performances. This decision follows the examples set by our counterparts on Broadway and in many regional theaters of Portland and Seattle. We still strongly urge vaccination against COVID-19 for all who are able.
Because our presence at the theater relies on the health and well-being of our live performers, their safety must always be a top consideration. We must continue to be vigilant in order to continue offering live, in-person performances. To ensure our ability to continue offering a full line-up of in-person productions, masks are suggested while in the theater.
