Director Nelda Reyes is already hard at work in preparations for “Jardín de sueños“. We thrilled that she’ll be providing biweekly updates about the development of this original, Spanish-language show (with English supertitles). Here’s her first installment:

Cuando la realidad se vuelve un engaño, una máscara de lo que quieres lograr, cuando tus sueños te revelan cómo eres, ¿qué pensar?, ¿vives en un sueño?, ¿sueñas con una vida diferente?. Estas preguntas me pregunto día a día en mi labor de entretejer historias en una producción que habla de los sueños, los anhelos, las vicisitudes de la vida. Jardín de sueños ha empezado a nacer, el equipo está completo, cerca de 20 personas entre artistas, productores, directores y asistentes y voluntarios están imaginando, creando, visualizando, analizando sus propios sueños para alimentar este proyecto. Como directora he, en semanas pasadas, planeado las actividades, discutido el guión en proceso, hablando de lo que me inspira a hacer este proyecto: los jóvenes estudiantes de Oregon.  Ahora, estamos empezando el proceso en  donde los artistas  de producción nos reunimos para hablar de ideas, inquietudes, colores, texturas, humores…Encontrando un lenguaje que vaya más allá del idioma mismo (muchos de los artistas de producción hablan inglés y provienen de la cultura anglosajona). Hay mucho que entender, conversar, aprender entre artistas tan diversos. Por ahora no me siento más que bendecida de trabajar con este equipo. De tener la inspiración de musas y hasta mozos de teatro, quienes al inicio sin muchas respuestas,  hacen del teatro, el proceso más inquietante, emocionante y a veces atribulante para un director.

When reality turns into a deception, merely a mask of what you want to achieve, when only your dreams reveal who you really are … What are you to do? Live in a dream? Dream a different life?  I ask myself these questions every day as I work to interweave stories in a production that speaks of the dreams, the yearnings, the vicissitudes of life.  Jardín de Sueños (Garden of Dreams) is coming to life with a team of some 20 people from artists, producers, directors, assistants and volunteers imagining, creating, visualizing and analyzing their own dreams to feed this project.  As the director, I have spent the past few weeks planning activities, discussing the script that’s still in development and talking about what inspires me to do this project: the young students of Oregon.  Now, we are beginning the process where the production’s artists all meet to share ideas, anxieties, colors, textures, moods … Finding a language that is more than the spoken word (many of the artists of production speak English and they come from the Anglo-saxon culture).  There is a lot to understand, to discuss, to learn from among such diverse artists.  For now, I feel more than blessed to work with this team, to have the inspiration of muses and even theatre ghosts, who at the beginning offer more questions than answers, making theatre the most exciting, unsettling and, at times, trying process for a director.
